Peter Giddings Racing

Lyn St. James Remembers Peter Giddings

It was sad news to learn of the passing of racer Peter Giddings this week. I got to know Peter while attending the Rolex Reunion at Laguna Seca a few years ago. I was wandering the paddock and was initially struck by a stunning vintage race car which I had never seen before, and was also struck by the small motorhome /open trailer, and the fact that a slightly built woman was working on the car while a large dog supervised.

I walked up and introduced myself and was gifted with a lesson about the history of his 1931 Alfa Romeo Tipo B, introduced to his lovely wife Judy, and his beautiful dog, Havoc.

That conversation continued in the years since then and he was always willing to share his passion and knowledge with not only me, but with the students who we would bring as guests of the RPM Foundation.

Once, at Watkins Glen, he invited me to sit in another historically important race car, his 1934 Alfa Romeo Monza GP car. Sitting in it made me feel fast.

The ultimate compliment came from Peter when he invited me to race his 1954 Lancia D24 at the CSRG Charity Challenge in October of 2018.

I was told that his health wasn't good, and was delighted when he visited on Saturday of the race weekend for a little while. I've enjoyed getting to know the many owners of vintage and historic race cars, but as always some people truly stand out, and I will have lasting fond memories of Peter Giddings.

May he rest in peace and be lapping dream cars wherever he may be.
